Dr. Gilchrist visits the Ferguson crypt where it was intended that Patrick Ferguson would be entombed with other family members.

The Mausoleum of the Fergusons of Pitfour, Greyfriars, Edinburgh [134k]. The inscription (simulated below) reads:

JACOBUS FERGUSON DE PITFOUR
SIBI CONGUGI POSTERISQUE FECIT
A:D:1775

"James Ferguson of Pitfour
made this for himself, his wife and descendants,
1775." It houses James, who as a Judge was known as Lord Pitfour, his wife Anne Murray, and 2 of their 6 children. James died in June 1777, a few months short of his 77th birthday - but Patrick didn't get to know his father had died until October or November that year, when his own life was in danger from his wound at Brandywine. Anne died of pneumonia, possibly after a fall, in January 1793, aged 84. The loss of "Pattie", the dearly-loved second son, had been a severe blow, especially as the first news reports reached the family a week before Christmas 1780.

James Murray, later General Murray [33k]. Pat's uncle, who encouraged his military career. The physical resemblance between them is very strong, which is probably why little Pattie was Uncle Jamie's favourite nephew! The portrait is by Allan Ramsay, later George III's friend and court painter. Ramsay was also a friend of the Murrays of Elibank. To lovers of 18C painting in Scotland, Ramsay is God. This picture is in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh.
Death of Patrick Ferguson [206k]. the famous Alonso Chappel engraving known to some of us as 'The Flying Scotsman'... loun-ar orbit indeed ('loun' is Aberdeenshire for 'lad', 'young man')! The artist's mistake - which hand the sword is falling from?!
